This is a project series about turning 2D into 3D. It started from a really simple insight. I mostly paint abstract work, but I also made a lot of pieces with recognizable forms. That got me thinking a lot about how these shapes would exist in real life, where they would sit, and what kind of physical form they could take.

Both the painting and the sculpture are not just simply painted with color. They are built through layers of dozens of drawings. I drew each one individually on hanji and stacked them in layers, and in the sculpture, those layered drawings are applied not only to the background but to the objects as well.

The main structure of this sculpture is the building at the center of the painting. If you look at the middle where all the circular objects come together, that’s where the building is.

It took a huge amount of trial and error to get the color of this ceramic vase right, and with all the layering and different techniques involved, it became a masterpiece with this really subtle, hard to describe color. Haha.
